What to Expect On Board

Modern cruise ships are like floating cities. Here's what first-timers are always surprised, and delighted, to discover.

🍽️
Food Around Every Corner

Most cruise lines include a main dining room, buffet, and casual spots in your fare. Specialty restaurants, such as steakhouses, Italian restaurants, and hibachi grills, usually cost extra and are a nice option for a more elevated night out.

🎭
Entertainment All Day & Night

Enjoy a full schedule of included entertainment, from theater-style shows and live music to comedy, trivia, karaoke, and movies. Each day, check the cruise line's app or daily program to see what's happening and plan your evening.

πŸ’³
How Onboard Spending Works

Cruise ships are mostly cashless. You will set up an onboard account linked to a credit card, and your room key is used to make purchases around the ship. Charges for drinks, excursions, and spa treatments are added to your account throughout the trip and charged to your card on file. Most cruise lines also add daily gratuities to your account, which cover tips for your cabin and dining staff.

πŸŒ…
Embarkation & Sea Days

Embarkation day can be hectic, so arrive early and explore while others board. Sea days (no port) are beloved by veterans: pools, spa, and total relaxation. Embrace them!

πŸ‹οΈ
Activities for Every Vibe

Rock climbing walls, water slides, cooking classes, art auctions, yoga: modern ships cater to everyone. Kids' clubs keep little ones busy while adults unwind at the adults-only pool.

🌊
Motion & Seasickness

Larger ships are very stable, and many travelers feel little to no motion. If you are prone to motion sickness, choose a mid-ship cabin on a lower deck where movement is less noticeable. You can also plan ahead by bringing remedies like Dramamine or Bonine, or using motion sickness bands or patches.

First-Timer FAQs

The questions every new cruiser asks, answered clearly with no cruise jargon required.

For most international cruises, yes. A passport is strongly recommended. If you're on a "closed-loop" cruise (starting and ending at the same U.S. port), U.S. citizens can use a birth certificate + government ID, but a passport gives you flexibility if anything goes wrong at a port.
Usually not automatically. Most lines charge a daily gratuity (around $16–$25 per person per day) added to your onboard account. Some premium lines include it in the fare. Always check before booking, as it can significantly affect your total cost.
Essentials: travel documents, medications, sunscreen (reef-safe for many ports), a formal outfit for dress-up nights, comfortable walking shoes for ports, and a tumbler to keep your drinks cold. Don't overpack, as laundry services are available on board.
The short answer is no, not the regular way. Keep your phone on airplane mode while onboard to avoid high charges. Most ships offer WiFi for an extra cost. If you turn off airplane mode, your phone may connect to the ship's network, like Cellular at Sea, which is billed as international roaming and can get expensive fast. Many travelers either buy a WiFi package or wait until they are in port to use free WiFi. It is also a good idea to contact your provider, like Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, to ask about your options before your trip.
The ship will not wait. It has a strict schedule. If you miss it at a port, you're responsible for catching up to the ship at the next destination. This is why travel insurance is so important. Book cruise line excursions if you're worried, as they guarantee your return to the ship.
It depends on the line and package. Water, coffee, and juice at meals are usually included. Specialty beverages are almost always extra unless you purchase a drink package. Compare the package cost vs. how much you'd realistically drink, as it is sometimes worth it and sometimes not.
Aim to arrive at the terminal 2 to 3 hours before the ship's departure time (not the arrival window listed on your ticket). Boarding is usually spread across a time window, and arriving closer to the start means less waiting. Check-in documents must be completed online in advance for most lines.
